Proximity Keys Proximity keys are the newest keyless entry technologies, which are gaining popularity on a number of vehicles. The key fob is put in a pocket or bag and used to unlock the car. The key fob will then communicate with the car, disengaging the immobiliser, allowing the engine to begin. There are some disadvantages to proximity key systems however. If the key fob is lost or damaged, it can't be used to start the vehicle. It's expensive to have a locksmith or dealership replace it. Batteries also provide power to the fobs, so they'll need to be replaced periodically. The proximity key technology has the disadvantage of breaking the cause-and-effect cycle that we are all familiar with when using physical keys. Despite their disadvantages however, proximity keys are an amazing invention for those who do not want to be locked out of their car.
